Library-Themed Wedding

Diana & I have finished putting together our handmade (yes we did it ourselves (although huge thanks must also go out to Joyce and Amy (http://www.amybach.org/) who helped cut hundreds of these invites) and have the blisters to prove it) wedding invitations; most of you probably won't get an invite (sorry about that), but I still wanted to share with you what they look like. It's a library theme (it sounds geeky, but it fits us because we both work in libraries...she's a library assistant @ a college and is pursuing a library degree, and I am a librarian).

As a fellow librarian I am outraged by your casual use of the Dewey Decimal System. 365.49? Penal and related institutions? Are you saying your marriage is like a jail sentence? How about 306 for culture and institutions, or 021 for library relationships?

Actually, I really love these. Makes me what to get remarried. Are you going to have you reception in a library?

We knew only a librarian would get that joke! Most people see LOVE and think "How cute they have the call number and everything!"

Unfortunately we had too many guest to do it in a library, but we are decking out the hall sort of like a library...

We didn't go with the whole library theme throughout, but our Save the Date cards were patterned after old due date cards and had the destination, 917.472, as our Dewey shout-out.

365.49: that's the best inside joke. Ever.

We did the same with the birth annoucment for our youngest. We put a shelf of books on the announcement, each with a name of our older children and ourselves with a Dewey number on each book befitting each of us. We sent these announcements out to library friends... Everybody else got a "regular" birth announcement.

Explain the 365.49 to those of us that aren't librarians. I get the 365 (days in a year) and Love. Whats the .49?

I love this!!! Congrats!

As far as can see, 365.49 has never been used in Dewey. 365.4 is prisons for specific kinds of inmates, and the closest number is 365.48 Military prisons. If 365.49 were ever used, it would probably be prisons for other kinds of inmates -- perhaps with an including note for husbands and wives :)

May you have many happy renewals!

I love this! I'll have to keep it in mind for myself if I ever take the plunge. Of course, I'd have to use LCC instead of Dewey being an academic librarian.

These are totally great. I love the ole ball and chain joke. Were I ever to get married I don't know if I'd have the wherewithal to go this far but I'm amazed and amused.

"Diana & I have finished putting together are handmade..."

it's "our" not "are"

i blame the linguistics minor.

i loved this so much that i sent it to all of my librarian friends. (i'm an editor.)

i often use dewey numbers as my status messages and get IMs saying things like: "i'm sorry you have a headache!" or "you're going to england?"

That rocks! I love when people send out invites that represent themselves.

Best wishes!

That is awesome! My husband and I got married this summer and also had a library-themed wedding. (We met while both working at the library, I'm getting my MLIS) We had Dewey-Decimal numbered tables, (eg, 100, 200, 300, and the head table was Reference) a book cake, and Dover Thrift books for favors. It worked really well!
Congrats to you and your fiance!!

I love the invitation and came to visit your site just for that.

I must say how disappointed I was to see you misspelled Melvil in your poll, though :(
Poor, old Mevil Dewey - the irrepressible reformer...

Damn. I wish we'd thought of something like that ;-)

"May you have many happy renewals!"

Hm. Our library allows just two renewals and then you have turn the item in. If no one else wants it, you can have it back...

..better make it a 30 year circulation.

Congrats!
