999 Boycott

I found out today that Quiet, Please is one of the books listed on the 999 boycott! Who knew?! For those of you who don't know about the boycott, it was started because of a bunch of readers getting mad at bestsellers selling for 15 bucks on Kindle; the whole point of Kindle is you save the publisher money by not having to waste money on paper, and passing on the savings to you. At 15 bucks you could just as well go to Border or Barnes and Noble (heck even Amazon!) and buy a copy of the book since bestsellers are typically priced well below the retail cost ($25 to $30)

I don't exactly fit into the 999 club sense I am not the author of a bestselling book, but it's still nice to be included in something!

From an authors point of view, I do wish my book was 9.99; it's a better price point and I think it would grab a few more readers. And why shouldn't it be cheaper? You don't have to market an ebook, you don't have to pay anything to print--really all you have to do is do a bit of formatting changes to the book and upload it.

Quiet, Please For Kindle

Quiet, Please  has at last found it's way onto Kindle. I've been hearing about people boycotting books that are over $9.99...sadly, my book falls into the above $9.99 price. At $15 it's still cheaper than the hardback.

I wish I had more say in how the book is formatted...I would have rewrote it for Kindle because footnotes on that device can be frustrating, and text box's just do not fit.

I also had to buy a copy of my own book to have it on my Kindle, which I think is absolutely ridiculous. Authors usually get ten to twenty free copies of any editions, but I guess this doesn't apply to electronic.

A Reader In the Third World

My brother is married to a Paupa New Guinea citizen, and they have spent the past several months overseas visiting relatives; they just returned from the remote island of his wife's parents (they live about three days away by boat, and there is no radio or phone contact). He emailed the picture below of a man on the island reading my book...actually it probably just looks like he's reading it, because not many people on the island can read or write; in any case, I still love the picture. Below that, is a picture of my niece, which I upload simply because she is the most beautiful baby in the world, and should be admired by all.

Quiet, Please: The TV Show?

When Quiet, Please first came out, people who handled buying things for people like Brad Pitt and George Clooney all came knocking and asking to have copies to look at. Nothing obviously came of any of this, but it was nice to be noticed. Shortly thereafter, I began working on a script for a possible TV pilot based loosely on the book with Andy Sweat.

This also was shuffled around studios to no avail—such the life of most TV pilots, I’m afraid. As of now, the script is in the hands of no one but Andy and myself, and I’ve decided to put it on my website for download (I’d put it here, but it’s a full script and thus too long) for your enjoyment…so enjoy!

Quiet Please Black Friday Sale

I am not a fan of the Post Office at Christmas; for this reason (and because I'm basically all out of books), I will no longer sell signed books off my web page as of Monday, December 1. I do not plan on selling copies after the new year either. The cost is $20.00 and that includes shipping.

If you would like to give a signed copy to someone as a gift, please order them before that date; also, if you want it personalized, make sure and say so when you order the copy.

I will also include a free copy of The Library Tree to anyone who orders during this last week (not much of a gift sense the book is already available). I will continue to sell The Library Tree until I sell out completely.

If you want an unsigned copy, I suggest using Amazon, which currently sells the book for $16.50.

McShhhh?

Earlier this week, I blogged about Air Borne Toxic Event attacking a critic to their CD; this week I got my own dose of a nasty review curtesy of the SF Guardian. True to my word, I will not comment about critics attack...

Someone once said there's no such thing as bad publicity; I suppose that's kind of the case. If you hated the book, then I'm sure you'll love the review--check it out!

A quick word about some confusion regarding the book auction and how to bid...all you have to do is leave how much in the comment box (if you don't want your name public, you can probably do it by contacting the people in charge). Gotham Profile

Some of you know that I teach writing through the Gotham Writers' Seminar in NYC (I teach memoir, humor, and beginning writing courses); earlier this week, the school ran a profile of me, which you can read for yourself here.

A marked-up copy of "Quiet, Please" (AKA, a version with all kinds of little scribbles and dabbles in the margin by me) is being auctioned off here. The starting bid is 5 bucks, so if you'd like a version of the book that's a bit rare, and that's going to charity, then bid away!

Quiet, Please - Simple Chinese

Earlier this week, Horizon Media (home to such authors as Khaled Hosseini, John le Carre, and Sarah Dunant) made an offer to translate "Quiet, Please" into simple Chinese (as opposed to complex Chinese, which it is already being translated into).

This means simple Chinese will become the third official non-English translation. Expect to see it at an Asian bookstore near you in about two years, give or take.

Amazon Price Drop

Amazon has dropped the price of my book by two bucks if anyone wants to buy it. There's only 4 copies left on Amazon US (more on the way, of course), 1 copy left at Amazon Canada, and Amazon UK is completely out of stock.

Amazon Price Hike

Amazon raised the price of Quiet, Please by two dollars over the weekend! They have a couple newest copies in the $9.50 if you want a bargain. It makes a great gift for all those incoming library school grads! And the best part about buying it used is I don't see a dime!

Very sorry, but I am all out of "Quiet, Please" so I have removed the option to buy it from my website. You can, of course, still by unsigned copies at just about every bookstore and online.

I don't plan on ordering more copies anytime soon, but if I ever have more, I'll post a note here.
